As fellow test rider and editor Pete Bengel and I cruised across the Glamis dunes in Polaris’ new  Jagged X Edition RZR XP 900, all I could think was, “This vehicle makes me laugh.”  It’s not that the Jagged X RZR is crude, underpowered, or incapable; far from it.  What had me laughing in my helmet was that it is ridiculously fun!

Yamaha brought a truck load of their sport ATVs to Glamis, and I was determined to ride them all.  After a great day on the awesome Raptor 700, I really didn’t want to give up the easy riding dune monster, but I thought I should get in some quality time with YFZ 450R as well.

Every rider that loves the dunes needs a trip to the Mecca of dune riding at least once.  Southern California’s Imperial Sand Dunes, a.k.a. Glamis, is to dune riders what Fenway Park is to baseball fans; it’s the heart and soul of their sport, and until you actually go there, it’s a little difficult to understand.  The Glamis Dunes are 6 miles wide and 45 miles long, running right up to and beyond the Mexican border.  We were determined to ride every bit of it and Yamaha had just the vehicle to do it; the new Raptor 700R.

If you’re going to ride, you’re also going to wrench now and then.  Most of the time that means nothing more than changing the oil, cleaning an air filter, or simple adjustments.  Every so often though your mechanical buddy will need a major rebuild, the most common of which is replacing piston rings.  On a two stroke this was no problem; pop the cylinder off, hone the bore, install new rings, and get back to riding, often times in the same afternoon.

Long Term Report - The Polaris RZR 570

Lessons Learned from a Year with the Fun-Sized RZR

Before the Polaris RZR, there wasn’t any Side x Side dedicated to high-performance recreation, but with the sporty RZR 800, Polaris had an instant hit and the race was on.  Since then other manufacturers have entered the game and each new model has seen huge gains in power, suspension, and performance.  Not everyone needs or even wants huge horsepower and desert taming suspension just to cruise the local trails, though, and for those riders, Polaris has a unique option.

Detroit’s Downtown Athletic Club seems like an unlikely location for a new model introduction.  It is more of a combination art museum and monument to captains of industry, as member plaques ring out names such as Ford, Dodge, Chrysler, and Briggs.  It’s easy to get the feeling that without a major factory with your name on it, you don’t get in.  The Detroit Athletic Club is about as far from a trail as you can get, but what we had come to see was unlike anything on the trail anyway.

Track Time - Mattracks' Litefoot Tracks

Go Anywhere. Anytime

There are tires for sand, snow, mud, and every other type of riding condition, but when the snow gets too deep or the bog too soft, nothing can get you through a tough spot like a good set of tracks.  MATTRACKS has been building tracks for everything from tractors to ATVs since 1994 and we’ve tried their track systems on rough, rocky terrain, across a muddy swamp, up hills that would give our relatives cause to worry, and of course, on snow.
