2016 Can-Am Outlander Family

2016.can-am.outlander-xt-1000r.silver.front-right..riding.on-trail.jpgCan-Am reinforces its performance leadership in the ATV market with three all-new, class-leading Rotax® engines. The Can-Am Outlander family of 4x4 ATVs consists of four different class-leading engine packages, with three new (570, 850 and 1000R) engines and the returning Outlander 650. The new model year also brings new color options, a new lower ratio for the “L” gear and no maintenance for one year (1,500 km / 932 miles) for all members of the family.

All four engines are also available in either a one-up chassis or a two-up (MAX) platform. Also, all Outlander ATVs are available at different price points with various feature-laden packages. Those additional packages are comprised of base (650), DPS,™ (all), XT™ (all), XT-P™ (850 / 1000R) and LIMITED (MAX 1000R). Can-Am Outlander ATVs are built around the industry-exclusive chassis, suspension and share many of the same specifications, engineering and components aside from their engine levels, chassis length and features specific to certain packages.

PERFORMANCE

NEW 4 Rotax V-Twin engine options

The revamped 89-hp, 80º 976cc liquid-cooled eight-valve Rotax V-twin engine in the Outlander 1000R gains 9% more power and leads the ATV industry performance. Updates include the design of the pistons, a new 54 mm throttle body and new engine head from the Maverick™ side-by-side vehicle.2016.can-am.outlander1000r-dps.red_.front-right.studio.jpg

The revised Outlander 850 is powered by a 78-hp, liquid-cooled, 80º 854cc V-twin engine. It, too, received larger pistons, a new 54 mm throttle body and the Maverick engine head, to increase power (+10%) and torque (+7%) becoming the most powerful engine in its category.

Considered an overachiever for its class, the 650cc liquid-cooled Rotax V-Twin power plant in the Outlander 650 produces 62 horsepower and can easily outperform competitive 700cc class models.

The new 48-hp, eight-valve, liquid-cooled SOHC Rotax 570 V-Twin powering the Outlander 570 offers improved performance for the new model year. The engine received larger pistons, longer stroke and a higher connecting rod to increase horsepower, torque and acceleration without compromising top-end speed. The efficient Rotax EFI-fed engine, which is mated to a 46 mm throttle body, gained an additional 4% horsepower and 9% torque increase compared to the Rotax 500 V-Twin it replaced.

UPDATED CVT transmission with extra-low L gear

The CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) means no shifting is required. The system includes standard engine braking with High, Low, Park, Neutral and Reverse gears. A new L gear ratio is now 7% shorter, meaning more comfort for low-speed riding and better traction for pulling heavy loads. The CVT housing has 13 bolts to ensure a proper seal and also includes an integrated drain plug.

Dual-room, no-tools air box

A no-tools air box is placed at a higher and more centralized location for filtering and processing air. A dual-room air filtration design captures dirty air in one portion of the box and clean air in another section before it sends the air to the engine. A higher air intake ensures performance in mud and water.2016.can-am.outlander1000r-dps.grey_.front-right.studio.jpg

Large radiators

The large, efficient radiators offer exceptional cooling capacity to keep the Rotax V-Twin engines running cool for optimal performance. The Outlander 1000R has roughly 27 kW of cooling capacity. The 850, 650 and 570 each have very capable 22 kW radiators.

High-grade exhaust and silencer

The Outlander ATVs have a performance-inspired exhaust system, including a durable end cap/cover, that produces a throaty and impressive exhaust note, yet adheres to strict dB and emissions standards.

HANDLING

Surrounding Spar Technology (SST™) G2 Frame

The Outlander family of 4x4 ATVs use an industry-exclusive Surrounding Spar Technology (SST) G2 frame from BRP.® The welded-steel SST frame offers increased structural integrity and handling with fewer parts.

Torsional Trailing arm Independent (TTI™) rear suspension

With far less moving parts than competitive systems, TTI is designed to eliminate scrub and camber changes when the suspension works up and down and keep the quad in straight line. The rear suspension also has motion-control shocks and offers 9.3 inches (24.1 cm) of travel. It includes a removable external sway bar and lower pivot points for geometric squatting to improve traction and power transfer.

2016.can-am.outlander-xt-850.camo_.rear-left.studio.jpg

Double A-arm front suspension with dive-control geometry

The Outlander ATVs use a dependable double A-arm front suspension with 9 inches (22.9 cm) travel. Dive-control geometry tightly controls the roll-center, especially when entering corners. The setup also inspires confidence, reducing kickback to the operator by locating the knuckle in the wheel.

Tri-Mode Dynamic Power Steering (DPS)

Calibrated specifically for aggressive trail riding and racing, the industry-exclusive Tri-Mode DPS system features three modes (MIN, MED and MAX) allowing riders to select the desired amount of steering assist for the terrain and conditions.

Visco-Lok QE‡ front differential

All DPS-equipped models come with the Visco-Lok QE calibration giving an even quicker engagement of the front differential.

Cast-aluminum wheels2016.can-am.outlander-xt-1000r.camo_.front-right.studio.jpg

Twelve-inch (30.5 cm) cast-aluminum wheels with a centre-less design offer reduced unsprung weight but offers improved strength.

26-inch (66 cm) tires

Mated to the cast-aluminum wheels are rugged 26-inch (66 cm) Carlisle Badlands tires that offer versatile performance in a variety of conditions and terrain.

214 mm disc brakes with twin-piston calipers

Two large 214 mm disc brakes with twin-piston calipers up front and a single twin-piston caliper with 214 mm hydraulic disc brake, located in the right, rear wheel, comprise the Outlander ATV braking system.

RIDER-FOCUSED DESIGN

NEW Revised maintenance break-in

The break-in maintenance requirement is no longer necessary on the Outlander vehicles, saving consumers time and money in the long run. The break-in has been revised to one year (1,500 km / 932 miles) from 10 hours (300 km / 186 miles).

Easy-to-use maintenance center

Easily accessible and out of the elements under the seat, a centralized maintenance area offers easier access and improved protection. The rear brake fluid reservoir, solenoid starter, battery and relays are also conveniently located under the seat.

High-strength multi-function racks with LinQ™ quick-attach accessory system

2016.can-am.outlander-xt-1000r.silver.front-right.studio.jpg

High-strength, reinforced composite racks feature an integrated anti-skid surface and elevated ridges for improved cargo holding. Predetermined “cutouts” were also added for use with the exclusive Can-Am LinQ quick-attach accessory system, which is adaptable and customizable for various uses and products. The racks have a combined rack capacity of 300 pounds (100 front / 200 rear), or 135 kg (45 front / 90 rear).

Water-resistant rear storage box

A huge 5.7-gallon (21.4-liter) rear storage box offers exceptional cargo capacity and is located beneath the rear cargo rack. The more-convenient location means riders can access the water-resistant, sealed storage box even when the rear cargo rack is loaded.

Digitally Encoded Security System (D.E.S.S.™)

D.E.S.S., the lone factory-installed anti-theft device, comes standard.

Enhanced lighting

The Outlander offers an impressive, 1,300-pound (590 kg) towing capacity and a standard 2-inch (5 cm) receiver hitch.

Large 5.4-Gal. (20.5 L) fuel tank

The fuel tank is rated to hold 5.4 gallons (20.5 L) of fuel.

2016.can-am.outlander-xt-1000r.white_.front-right.studio.jpg

Multi-function digital gauge

The LCD display includes a speedometer, tachometer (bar graph RPM, bottom bar numerical RPM), odometer, trip and hour meters. A diagnostic center, gear position, engine hour meter, 4x4 indicator, temperature light, engine light, fuel gauge, clock are also part of the standard package.

59-inch Wheelbase

The 2016 Outlander MAX family has an 8-inch (20.3 cm) longer wheelbase over the one-up Outlander ATVs. The added length allows the passenger to sit in front of the rear axle for improved handling and comfort. The stretched design also improves the ride for single riders.

Dynamic Passenger Comfort (DPC™)

The Outlander MAX ATVs have passenger-influenced ergonomics to produce the most comfortable and consumer-friendly two-rider vehicle to date. DPC ergonomics means comfortable seating, cushioned ride and placing the passenger in an optimal riding position. The seating system allows for gradual bending of the backrest and pivoting to reduce kick back during acceleration / braking as well as offering engineered enhancements like regressive flex and formed grooves for improved comfort.

Passenger handholds

The angled rear passenger handle position allows for flex while riding and also reduces the overall impact to the passenger’s hands. The handles also allow for numerous hand positions to enhance the passenger’s riding experience and comfort level. For one-up use, the rear seat has integrated handles that don’t limit rear rack space or prohibit single-rider comfort.

Passenger footrest2016.can-am.outlander-max650dps.yellow.front-right.studio.jpg

All MAX models with the G2 SST frame have foot peg angles and depth that cater to the rear passenger. The footrests also have a third row of foot grips to improve lateral grip.

Convertible Rack System (CRS™) w/ box

The Outlander MAX is the lone two-up ATV that comes standard with a Convertible Rack System (CRS) for transforming the ATV into a single-rider machine. The transition literally takes just seconds and eliminates the touring look and feel when riding alone. The fact that the passenger handholds are attached to the seat means they don’t inhibit rider movement or take up rear rack space. The CRS system includes a small storage box that uses the LinQ system and removes the void when the passenger seat is removed. A rear optional cargo box is also available from PAC.
