Yamaha had a problem, not with one ATV in particular, but instead with a lack of choices. For the last couple years every ATV in the Yamaha utility lineup featured the same 708cc engine. That left a lot of midsize utility ATV buyers wanting, and eventually buying elsewhere as manufacturers like Polaris, Honda, Can-Am and Arctic Cat filled out their lineups with plenty of midsize ATVs.

Last year Yamaha released their version of pure sport performance with the YXZ1000R. This machine brought a real sequential shift lever and foot operated clutch to the off road community for the first time in a SXS as well as speculation on how well it would be received. Some questioned if having to shift gears would limit the high revving, triple cylinder machine to the more experienced drivers in the UTV market. We should have known Yamaha would have an answer waiting.

I was out of room. There are over 150,000 acres on the California & Arizona border in the giant sand playground known as Glamis and yet I was hurtling towards the line at where I would have to lift my foot off the throttle before completing my top speed run. A moment ago I had come charging down an enormous sand hill parallel to Interstate 8 and the Mexican border, shifting gears on Yamaha’s new YXZ 1000R as the engine screamed towards 10,000 rpms.

Yamaha Side-by-Side Lineup Continues to Grow in 2016
The new YXZ1000R SE features an all-new Silver Metallic and Blaze Red Metallic painted exterior and interior with color matched seats and A-arms, along with durable 14-inch true bead lock wheels to tackle terrain with style and function. The new YXZ1000R is Assembled in the USA at Yamaha’s factory in Newnan, Georgia, and is scheduled to arrive at Yamaha dealerships in April. MSRP is $21,599.
